What is kanna?

Kanna is the common name for Sceletium tortuosum, a low-growing succulent native to South Africa. Its leaves contain a group of alkaloids, the best known being mesembrine. Kanna has a long history of traditional use in southern Africa, where the plant was chewed or fermented and dried. Today it is sold in the U.S. as a dietary supplement, usually as an extract.

What forms does kanna come in?

Kanna is sold as gummies, tablets that dissolve under the tongue or are chewed, loose powder, capsules, teas and tinctures. Products list the amount of kanna extract per serving, but extracts are made at different strengths, so the same number of milligrams from two brands may not contain the same amount of alkaloids. Some products combine kanna with other ingredients such as caffeine, L-theanine, damiana or mushroom extracts.

What are kanna gummies?

Kanna gummies are chewable gummies made with kanna extract, often alongside other botanicals or caffeine. The ones we list range from 35mg to 100mg of kanna per gummy where the amount is stated; Ferris Wheel doesn't list its amount.

Are kanna products lab tested?

We host the brand's lab report (COA) on each product page where one is available. The reports we've seen test for contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and microbes, or for cannabinoids or psilocybin, but none so far measures kanna alkaloid content, so the per-serving amount comes from the label. Each product page notes what its report covers and what it doesn't. No current report is available for Ferris Wheel Party Tabs.

Who can buy kanna?

Most of the kanna brands we list sell only to adults 21 and over. Shipping rules vary by store; each product page lists the states a store won't ship to. Kanna products are not evaluated by the FDA. Check with a medical professional before use, especially if you take prescription medication: brand labels warn against combining kanna with SSRIs and MAOIs.
